Why do some people spell Philip with two "l's"?

The name Philip is spelled with only one "l" in The Bible (the apostle Philip), by royalty (e.g., Prince Philip of the U.K.), and was spelled that way by historical figures (e.g., Philip of Macedonia, who was the father of Alexander the Great). Why then do some people spell it with two "l's" as Phillip?
